Tegal under control after riot
SEMARANG, Central Java: Diponegoro Military Commander Maj. Gen. Tyasno Sudarto claimed yesterday that antiriot forces had successfully restored security and order in Tegal, about 165 kms west of here, after violence erupted in the town Monday.
Tyasno said more than 62 shops, three cars, several government offices and banks were burned and looted during the unrest.
At least 34 people were seriously injured, including two students and a local reporter.
Tyasno said the real cause of the rampage, during which at least 15,000 rioters clashed with troops, was still being investigated.
"However, in general, the situation in Tegal has returned to normal after we arrested 40 rioters," Tyasno explained.
The incident occurred after the demonstrators, who had staged a peaceful protest in the mayoralty compound to demand the dismissal of Mayor Zakir, were not allowed to convey their demand to the council.
"We will take stern measure against any violations of the laws," Tyasno warned. (har)
