Teenage prostitute boom in Semarang

SEMARANG: A provincial councilor expressed concern over the apparent boom in teenage prostitutes in the city who are operating publicly along its streets and entertainment centers.

"About 1,000 young prostitutes have already entered the city, especially because of this fasting month's school holiday. They are flocking massage parlors, dimly-lit kiosks and sidewalk stalls," councilor Abdul Kadir Karding said on Friday.

The teenagers came from Demak, Grobogan, Kudus, Jepara, Salatiga and Boyolali, he claimed.

"We have to cope with the matter soon before it's too late," he said, warning of the spread of sexually transmitted diseases as a result. (har/edt)
