Teater Koma to perform its new opera

JAKARTA (JP): Teater Koma will present Opera Sembelit (Constipated Opera) at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta (The Jakarta Playhouse), Central Jakarta, for two weeks beginning tonight.

Directed by Nano and Syaeful Anwar, the opera is about a man who first discovers that when he goes to the toilet his feces resemble those of a goat and then later he suffers from constipation -- a problem that becomes a national epidemic.

The performance begin nightly at 8 p.m.

Opera Sembelit is the 83rd production of Teater Koma, in collaboration with The Jakarta Playhouse.

Headed by Rano Riantiarno, the theater group is known for its sharp social and political criticism. In 1989, the government banned its Medan performance of Sampek Engtay, based on a Chinese love story. In 1990, Suksesi (Succession) was banned after being staged for 10 days in Jakarta. In the same year, Opera Kecoak (Cockroach Opera), was also banned. (ylt)
