Team calls off search of mine

SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: A search and rescue team ended on Friday the search for victims of a landslide which hit a traditional gold mine in the East Kalimantan district of Kutai, with the death toll at 32, Antara reported.

But Kutai Police chief Lt. Col. Abdul Madjid R., who led the search and rescue operation, said the total number victims in the mishap was 39, instead of 40 as estimated earlier.

Rescuers recovered two more bodies from the mud on Friday after pulling out 30 bodies in the rescue effort which began on Tuesday.

Seven gold diggers survived the accident when the mine's walls collapsed. (edt)
