Teachers take exams for govt allowances

JAKARTA: More than 10,000 teachers from private schools sat tests on Monday in an attempt to qualify for government allowances at the Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta.

The teachers came from all levels of education, including vocational institutions and schools for the handicapped.

Head of the city education standardization body, Zainal Arifin, told detik.com only 2,020 teachers would qualify to receive the monthly government allowance of Rp 460,000 (US$50.55).

Teachers who qualified would get a three-year contract and yearly performance evaluations, he said. -- JP
