Teachers needed in Central Java

SEMARANG, Central Java: The head of the provincial office of the national education ministry said on Wednesday that nearly 43,500 teachers were needed for the next school year.

Soeparto said recruitment of elementary school teachers was the most urgent, with recent estimates of a need for 27,823.

He added that 12,172 junior high school and 2,594 high school teachers also were required.

The office is also seeking 839 vocational school teachers.

"We have had to let teachers from other subjects teach studies which are not their expertise to cope with the shortage," he was quoted as saying by Antara.

"This will hamper the attempt to increase the quality of education in our province." (emf)
