Teacher gets jail term for striking student

PURWOKERTO, Central Java: The Purwokerto district court
sentenced a teacher to one-month imprisonment on Thursday after
he was found guilty of beating a student.

The judge said that Asrori, 40, had violated Article No. 351
of the Criminal Code on violent crimes by striking a belligerent
student, named Muhandoko, 15.

The incident occurred in July when Asrori struck Muhandoko
because the later had started several student brawls in front of
the school compound despite repeated warnings.

Muhandoko's parents later filed a complaint with the police
that eventually led to legal proceedings.

The verdict came despite a show of public support for the
teacher outside the court where hundreds of teachers and students
rallied in support of Asrori.(45/lup)
