Tax revenue exceeds target

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Domestic tax revenues collected by the Directorate General of Taxation surpassed the target set in the 2001 budget.

Director General of Taxation Hadi Purnomo said that his office collected a total of Rp 158.26 trillion (US$15.82 billion) from various taxes, exceeding the budget target of Rp 156.57 trillion.

Speaking on the sidelines of the New Year's celebration at his office, Hadi noted that higher tax revenue was made possible from the higher revenue from non-oil income tax and VAT.

Non-oil income tax revenue reached Rp 71.21 trillion, as compared to Rp 69.24 trillion set in the 2001 revised budget; meanwhile, VAT revenue totaled Rp 55.71 trillion, higher than the target of Rp 53.45 trillion.

He also explained that tax revenue from land-and-building tax and from land-and-building-title-acquisition tax totaled Rp 6.66 trillion surpassing the target for the whole year of Rp 6.28 trillion.

Hadi, however, revealed that the revenue from oil-and-gas income tax and other taxes were below target.

Revenue from oil-and-gas income tax was Rp 23.1 trillion, compared to Rp 25.73 trillion in the budget due to weakening oil prices toward the end of 2001.

Meanwhile, revenue from other taxes was Rp 1.58 trillion, below the target of Rp 1.94 trillion.

In addition to the various taxes contributed by the tax office, the government also has other tax revenues collected by the Directorate General of Customs and Excise.

For last year, the customs and excise office was targeted to collect a total of Rp 28.6 trillion in revenue, of which Rp 17 trillion came from excise and Rp 10.4 trillion from import duties.

No data is available on the collection of excise and import duties.

For 2002 budget, the government and the House of Representatives have agreed to increase tax revenue to Rp 184.68 trillion, including Rp 22.35 trillion from excise.

Target revenues for all taxes except oil-and-gas tax have been raised for this year.

Non-oil income tax revenue has been boosted to Rp 88.82 trillion, VAT and luxury taxes to Rp 70.1 trillion, land-and- building tax to Rp 5.92 trillion, land-and-building-acquisition tax to Rp 2.21 trillion and other taxes to Rp 1.95 trillion.

Income tax revenue from the oil and gas sector for this year has been revised down to Rp 15.68 trillion due to falling oil prices.
