Tangerang to build sport complex

JAKARTA: The Tangerang regency administration plans to build a
20-hectare sports complex near Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD) housing
estate in Pagedangan district of Tangerang regency, regent Ismet
Iskandar said on Tuesday.

The newly elected regent said that the sports complex was
expected to be an alternative to the Gelora Bung Karno Sports
Complex at Senayan, South Jakarta and would host various national
and international sports events.

According to Ismet, PT Bumi Serpong Damai, the developer of
the BSD housing estate has provided 20 hectares of land as part
of its obligation to allocate 20 percent of its total area for
developing facilities for the local community.

He said the construction of the sports complex, was expected
to start in 2004.

"We've got the land, but the problem now is that we are still
looking for private investors because we have no funds to finance
it. It could cost about Rp 1 trillion," he said.

However, Ismet promised that if investors were willing to
construct the new sports stadium, the administration would allow
them to also manage the facility.--JP
