Tailor breaks drumming record

BOGOR: A tailor who is also a drummer created a record by playing the drums for 24 hours and 24 minutes nonstop from Sunday morning to Monday morning.

Kunto Hartono, 25, has broken the drumming record of eight hours achieved by Jelly Tobing in October 1988, and 12 hours 40 minutes by Cahyo Budiono in October 1997.

During the attempt, which was part of celebrations of Youth Pledge Day on Monday, he only took breaks for calls of nature for a while on Sunday night.

At the end of his attempt on Monday at 7:20 a.m., he was a little weak and had to be helped down from the stage. But he got a warm reception from thousands of visitors who had packed Plaza Balaikota, Bogor.

Kunto was presented with a gift of Rp 20 million from Bogor Mayor HR. Iswara Natanegara and Rp 10 million from the event organizing committee.

He said that he had played the drums since he had been a junior high school student in Banyuwangi, East Java. And, after the death of his grandfather several months ago, he liked playing the drums for long periods to distract himself from his sadness. --JP
