Mrs. Tuti Try Sutrisno (third right with sash over shoulder), wife of the Vice President, opened a table setting exhibition at the Regent Hotel yesterday.
The two-day exhibition features the art of table setting from various Indonesian cultures, including those of Palembang, Betawi, Tana Toraja and Java.
The chairwoman of the exhibition committee, Yuna A. Nasution, said the exhibition mainly aimed at promoting our ancestors' table settings.
Thirty-eight exhibitors, including artisans and representatives of hotels and restaurants, are taking part in the exhibition, which is sponsored by Yayasan Sekar Saji Nusantara, a nonprofit organization set up by seven housewives specializing in table settings.
"Our country's traditions in table setting are being lost amid the popularity of western culture. Though in this exhibition we are also showing some western table settings," she said.
Participant Jane Chen, who is exhibiting tableware from Bali, was chosen as first winner of table settings yesterday.
Second place went to duo Amalia and Arimbi, while third went to Jaya Ibrahim.
Dhanny Dahlan, coordinator of the exhibition, said the criteria for the selection of the winners was creativity, uniqueness, harmony and originality. (05)
