T. Abang vendors to be cleared

JAKARTA: Central Jakarta Mayor Muhayat said on Thursday that street vendors on Jl. Kebon Jati near the Tanah Abang market had to relocate to the Kebon Jati market before the start of Idul Fitri on Nov. 14.

"All of the street vendors must clear off the road before Idul Fitri," he was quoted as saying by Antara.

He said 1,257 out of some 2,000 street vendors had agreed to occupy the third and fourth floors of the Kebon Jati market -- also known as Blok G of the Tanah Abang textile market, which is the largest textile center in Southeast Asia.

Muhayat did not say what would happen to the remaining street vendors, who he said were not registered with city market operator PD Pasar Jaya.

PD Pasar Jaya plans to build temporary kiosks along Jl. Kebon Jati to accommodate traders from blocks B, C, D and E of the textile market, which will be renovated in January. -- JP
