Syafii Maarif visits Australia
JAKARTA: Muhammadiyah chairman Syafii Maarif said a limited understanding of Islam had caused misperceptions about Indonesian Muslims among Australians.
Upon departure for Australia on Saturday, the Muslim figure said these misperceptions had caused strained ties between the two countries.
"That is why while in Australia I will try to meet all walks of life to explain the Indonesian Muslim's position and the ongoing democratization process here," Syafii said.
He is also scheduled to meet Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Downer.--Antara
