Sweden needs more evidence on GAM

JAKARTA: Swedish authorities have asked the Indonesian government to provide more data on the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) leaders, currently residing in Stockholm, so that authorities there can continue with the legal case against the rebels.

Marty Natalegawa, spokesman of the Indonesian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, said on Friday that the Swedish Attorney General's Office had questioned GAM rebel leaders several times.

"We are currently preparing the answers to those questions so we can provide adequate evidence against them," Marty said.

Stockholm had promised Indonesia to take legal action against GAM leaders in Sweden -- Hasan Tiro, Malik Mahmood and Abdullah Zaini-- for leading the rebellion in Aceh, Indonesia's westernmost province. ----JP
