'SWA' magazine ranks BII as the best bank

JAKARTA (JP): Bank Internasional Indonesia (BII), with assets of Rp 12.89 trillion (US$5.5 billion), was ranked the soundest of nine banks with assets over Rp 10 trillion by SWA business magazine.

Bank Dagang Nasional Indonesia took second place, Bank Danamon was third, Bank Negara Indonesia was fourth and state-owned Bank Rakyat Indonesia was fifth.

State-owned Bank Ekspor Impor Indonesia was ranked sixth, Bank Central Asia was seventh, Bank Dagang Negara was eighth and Bank Bumi Daya was ninth.

The monthly magazine based its rankings on the banks' performances according to return on risk assets, net revenue from funds, fee-based income, capital adequacy ratio, loan to core deposit ratio and lending quality.

Citibank was ranked as the best of the banks with assets between Rp 1 trillion and Rp 10 trillion.

Second in this category was the branch office of the Bank of Tokyo, third was Bank DKI, fourth was Bank Dharmala and fifth was Bank Tiara. Bank Sumitomo Niaga, Unibank, Bank Bali, Bank Nusa and Bank Jaya were ranked sixth to 10th respectively.

Sujatmaka of SWA magazine said the country's 240 commercial banks were ranked in categories because it was difficult for small banks to compete with large banks.

The magazine, in cooperation with MarkPlus Professional Service, also ranked banks according to the quality of their customer service.

Citibank was ranked as the best service provider, followed by Bank Rakyat Indonesia, Bank Internasional Indonesia, Bank Utama, Bank Central Asia, Bank Danamon, Bank Pacific, Bank Bukopin and Bank Niaga.

Handi Irwan, a partner of MarkPlus Professional Service, said that the survey reviewed the main banks with assets between Rp 2 trillion and Rp 12 trillion.

Infobank announced its bank ratings last week, with Bank Tiara ranked number one with assets of over Rp 1 trillion.

Bank DKI and Bank Dharmala were ranked second and third respectively. The branch office of the Bank of Tokyo was ranked fourth, Bank Mashill was fifth and Bank Bira was sixth.

Bank Panin, Bank Surya, the branch office of Citibank and Bank Bali were ranked seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th respectively.

The magazine based its assessment on the performances of banks' capital asset ratios, net interest margins, returns on assets, returns on equity and loan to deposit ratios.

Bank Rama and Daiwa Perdania were ranked first and second in the Infobank top-ten list of banks with assets between Rp 500 billion and Rp 1 trillion.

Bank NISP, United Overseas Bank Bali, Bank Prima Express, Bank Putera Surya Perkassa, Bank Tokai Lippo, Bank Credit Lyonnais Indonesia, LTCB Central Asia and BPD Sumatra Utara were ranked from three to 10 respectively. (hen)
