Sutrisno breaks world powerlifting record

JAKARTA: Indonesian powerlifter Sutrisno broke a world record in the 60 kilogram weightclass at the Powerlifting World Championships ending in Finland on Thursday by lifting a total of 710.0 kilograms to earn him a gold medal.

"This is such a proud moment for all of us. I hope Sutrisno's success will motivate his compatriot weightlifters being prepared for the Pusan 2002 Asian Games," executive director of the Indonesian Weightlifting, Powerlifting and Body Building Association (PABBSI), Gandrung, told Antara news agency on Friday.

Meanwhile, PABBSI's official for athlete development, Steve Tengko, said the previous record was set by a French powerlifter with a total of 707.5 kilograms.

"Sutrisno informed me directly from Finland about his success. He lifted 270 kilograms in the squat, a 270-kilogram dead lift and 170-kilogram bench press," he said. -- JP
