Sutiyoso warns road contractor

JAKARTA: City Governor Sutiyoso threatened on Wednesday to cancel road repair work by a contractor on Jl. Iskandar Muda, South Jakarta, as it had caused heavy traffic jams in the area over the last few days.

"We can retender the road repair project if the contractor is proved to have violated its working contract," Sutiyoso told reporters at City Hall on Wednesday.

He said he would ask city Public Works chief IGK Suena to explain the repair contract and warn the contractor.

He said the contractor should have liaised with related parties, such as the city Traffic Control and Land Transportation Agency (DLLAJ) before starting the repair work, to avoid traffic jams.

Suena could not be reached for comment, while his staff said that the work was being supervised by the South Jakarta Public Works office.

Heavy traffic jams have occurred in the last few days on the road and others adjacent to it.

Meanwhile, DLLAJ chief Rustam Effendy apologized to the public for any inconvenience caused by the road repairs, saying that they were unavoidable.
