Sutiyoso told to improve performance

JAKARTA (JP): The National Mandate Party (PAN) faction of the City Council warned Governor Sutiyoso on Tuesday to improve his performance within 100 days or face a vote of no-confidence.

PAN's deputy chairman, Tjuk Sudono, said the faction only endorsed Sutiyoso's accountability speech for a 100-day period and would conduct another evaluation at that time.

"We have sent forms to all of our chapters in the capital to monitor conditions in Jakarta daily.

"When the evaluation is complete, if there is no improvement, we will institute a vote of no-confidence," Tjuk said.

Most of the councillors eventually accepted Sutiyoso's revised speech on Monday after a close vote during the council's plenary session, saying that the governor had shown significant improvement in the last 30 days.

Only two of the 11 factions in the council -- the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) and the Justice Party (PK) bluntly rejected the speech during Monday's session.

"If we endorsed the revised speech, it does not mean that Sutiyoso can relax because we will keep our eyes on his administration," Tjuk said.

Aspects

He said there were still many things to be improved by Sutiyoso, especially in the three aspects that the governor had stipulated in his revised accountability speech: reducing public order offenses, improving public services and restructuring the management of city-owned companies.

"Although a decision to initiate another evaluation is outside current procedures, we should not wait another year to correct the current administration if it proves to be incapable," he added. (dja)
