Sutiyoso supports irregularities probe

JAKARTA: Governor Sutiyoso said on Friday that he supported an investigation by the Jakarta Prosecutor's Office into alleged irregularities reported by the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK).

"I support the action taken by the prosecutor's office. I will punish any official who is proven guilty," said Sutiyoso.

He was commenting on the questioning of the head of the population and civil registration agency, Silviana Murni, by prosecutors on Thursday.

Silviana was the first city official questioned as a witness in connection with the reports of irregularities worth some Rp 820 billion in several institutions under the control of the city administration.

Sutiyoso also encouraged the prosecutor's office to question other officials who may be responsible for the irregularities.

Before BPK revealed its findings in February, there had been allegations of corruption involving city officials and city councillors, but legal proceedings were not taken.--JP
