Sutiyoso gets doctorate degree

JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta's Governor Sutiyoso has been awarded an
honorary doctorate in political science from the University of
Pusan, South Korea.

Sutiyoso, who was inaugurated in a ceremony at the university
on Wednesday, was given the academic title for his success in
leading Jakarta amid political uncertainty.

"I consider the degree also a reward for Jakarta's citizens,"
Sutiyoso said on Thursday upon returning from trips to the U.S.,
Canada and Korea, which began last week.

He said the process for the awarding of the degree had begun
after he spoke at the Asian Cities Summit, held in Pusan two
years ago.

At the summit, Sutiyoso talked about how to tackle development
and security in the city amid the prolonged political turmoil and
multifaceted crises. (jun)
