Suspected snoops investigated
JAKARTA (JP): Six men suspected of being military intelligence agents were handed over to the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) for further investigation after being caught by students in several student protests here.
Muchtar from YLBHI said on Sunday that some of the arrested suspects had already been released because they were unwilling to provide information.
"None of the suspected intelligence officers wanted to reveal their identities.
"So, we can only obtain their addresses and escort them to their respective homes. But we'll keep probing who they really are," he told The Jakarta Post.
One of the six was captured by students in the early hours of Sunday inside the Atma Jaya Catholic University campus on Jl. Sudirman in South Jakarta.
The man, identified as Tatang, claimed he was employed by an advertising company, PT Tika Utama, and was a graduate of the Institute of Social and Politics Sciences (IISIP).
"I'm concerned about the students' struggle, that's why I want to remind them not to be easily provoked," Tatang told reporters before he was sent to YLBHI.
Tatang was reportedly spotted asking students the identities of their leaders and using military codes in notes which were later found inside his bag. (emf)
