Suspected highway robbers nabbed

JAKARTA (JP): Police efforts to fight crime on the Cikampek toll road paid off on Monday when they identified three men thought to belong to a notorious six-member gang in Cimahi, West Java.

Karawang chief of detectives Setya Widodo identified the three men only as Par, Riki and Roj, alias Ron, alias Bas.

The police shoot at the robbers after they resisted arrest. The other three members are still at large.

Widodo told Antara that Roj and his gang always wore military or police uniforms to stop vehicles on the road. They also used cell phones and fake military number plates on their vehicles.

Robbery on the toll road had increased recently, according to Widodo. Robbers usually target trucks transporting commercial goods.

Widodo said Roj had confessed to committing five robberies on the road, with the last one occurring several days ago when he and his gang robbed a truck transporting 3,200 packaged beverages.
