According to a survey by HSBC, the small and medium-sized businesses (UKM) in Indonesia are quite optimistic about the current economic situation in Indonesia this year.
Up to 13 percent of UKM is planning to increase their workforce, some by more than 20 percent
On the other hand, only 7 percent of UKM have said that they will make cut backs, while 80 percent are planning to keep their staff.
Steven Miller, Head of UKM Division in HSBC Indonesia, said the survey showed that UKM Indonesia are leaning towards an optimistic view of the future, even though they would make more conservative decisions in their future activities and investments.
According to the survey, the country’s UKM is relatively better in surviving an unstable economy than small and medium-sized enterprises of developed countries in the Asian Pacific region.
Almost half of the responses indicate that they believe the Indonesian 2009 economical performance would be a promising one. (emh)
