Surjadi appeals religious unity

JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Governor Surjadi Soedirdja appealed on the religious communities yesterday to enhance unity because unity was the main capital for development.

Inaugurating a mosque in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, Surjadi said religious communities should not be provoked by rumors which could divide them.

The At-Taqwa mosque was built by locals with the help of the city administration which donated Rp 400 million of the Rp 1.5 billion mosque.

"Bloody riots involving religious communities in several towns should not happen again," he said referring to recent riots.

The city administration has been trying to give proper attention to religious life so harmony can be attained. (05/sur)
