Surabaya students win WFP contest
SURABAYA: Two Indonesian elementary students from Surabaya have won the awards for the School Feeding Design Competition annually held by the World Food Program (WFP).
Bishow Parajuli, WFP deputy country director for Indonesia said at the awards ceremony, held at Sidodadi I elementary school here on Friday that Sjamsul Arifin, 11, from Sidodadi I school won the first prize and Mujiana Rahayu, 12, from Pacar Keling VI elementary school Surabaya came second.
"There were 287 participants worldwide. Sjamsul gets US$100 cash and a certificate, while Rahayu gets $50 cash and a certificate," Bishow said. "The prize is not so much, but creating international solidarity among children is very important."
The School Feeding Program is one of the many programs WFP is implementing in Indonesia.
In Surabaya 25,500 elementary students from 585 schools benefit from the program. They received 10 kilograms of rice per month, said Bishow. (nur/sur)
