Surabaya students win WFP contest

SURABAYA: Two Indonesian elementary students from Surabaya
have won the awards for the School Feeding Design Competition
annually held by the World Food Program (WFP).

Bishow Parajuli, WFP deputy country director for Indonesia
said at the awards ceremony, held at Sidodadi I elementary school
here on Friday that Sjamsul Arifin, 11, from Sidodadi I school
won the first prize and Mujiana Rahayu, 12, from Pacar Keling VI
elementary school Surabaya came second.

"There were 287 participants worldwide. Sjamsul gets US$100
cash and a certificate, while Rahayu gets $50 cash and a
certificate," Bishow said. "The prize is not so much, but
creating international solidarity among children is very
important."

The School Feeding Program is one of the many programs WFP is
implementing in Indonesia.

In Surabaya 25,500 elementary students from 585 schools
benefit from the program. They received 10 kilograms of rice per
month, said Bishow. (nur/sur)
