Subway, no way
From Koran Tempo
Regarding the letter of Mikael from Stockholm, Sweden, who asked when Indonesia would have a subway (Koran Tempo, Aug. 31). I believe the construction of a subway here should be opposed, for three reasons:
First, the construction would require huge funds, and would not be relevant for Indonesia as it is already burdened by massive debt.
I think it would be better if the funds were used to restore school buildings, or to build sidewalks, like Orchard Road in Singapore.
Second, the subway would need to be managed efficiently. Are we ready for this? The fact is we have floundered in managing the busway, can we handle a subway system too?
Third, the subway project could allow for corruption, collusion and nepotism.
