Subdistrict chiefs seek clean leader

PURWOKERTO, Central Java: No less than 200 subdistrict chiefs across the Central Java regency of Banyumas have threatened to campaign for a tax boycott if they think the upcoming regental election is marred by bribery and vote-buying.

The subdistrict chiefs issued their warning during a rally in front of the local legislature on Wednesday.

Dressed in their white official uniforms, the subdistrict chiefs went to the legislative building in a motorcade. Following an argument, only 20 of them were allowed to enter the building.

The representatives of the subdistrict chiefs were received by chairman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle Manap Hadi Martono and his secretary Guno Murtopo, who promised to support a clean and fair election.

The election will be held next Wednesday.

"We don't want to have a leader who is elected in a corrupt election," one of the demonstrators said. -- JP
