Students tried for consuming 'Putaw'

JAKARTA (JP): Two students of privately run Sahid University were indicted at South Jakarta Court yesterday for possessing and consuming putaw, a low grade heroin.

Prosecutor Zaiful Alim Said said the defendants, Rachmatulloh, 26, and Zamroni, 22, were charged under Article 23 of Law No. 9/1979 on narcotics.

Under the law, a person found guilty of illegally consuming heroin could face a maximum three years in jail, while those found guilty of possession could face a maximum 10 years in jail, said Zaiful.

"The amount of heroin is also considered," he said.

He said Rachmatulloh and Zamroni were arrested while inhaling putaw in a room at Sofyan Hotel on Jl. Supomo in South Jakarta on June 12.

During the raid, the police confiscated 0.88 grams of putaw from the students, said the prosecutor.

Rachmatulloh is a resident of Jl. Bima in Bekasi, while Zamroni lives on Jl. Menteng Atas Barat in Central Jakarta.

The two students are being temporarily detained at Pondok Bambu penitentiary in East Jakarta.

Presiding judge Soedadi adjourned the trial until next week when witnesses will testify. (jun)
