Students short of money

MALANG, East Java: Hundreds of West Kalimantan youths studying at eight local Islamic boarding schools have not received any money from their parents for months following widespread ethnic unrest in West Kalimantan.

Malang Regent M. Said said he had told the Surabaya military command that 487 students were broke. "I asked for advice from the military commander. But my office is also trying to help the students," he was quoted by Antara as saying Tuesday.

K.H. Qosim Buchori, a manager of one of the schools, said some money and food had been donated by private sources. (swe)
