Students protest politics laws

BANDUNG, West Java: Hundreds of students from the Bandung Moslem University held a campus demonstration yesterday to demand the government revoke its laws on politics.

The laws stipulate, for instance, that there are only three political groupings: Golkar, the Moslem-based United Development Party and the nationalist-Christian alliance Indonesian Democratic Party.

The students also called for a regeneration of national leaders and demanded that the government abolish its security approach of dealing with the public.

Noted poet W.S. Rendra was present during the demonstration and read some of his popular poems, including Doa Seorang Rangkasbitung di Rotterdam (The Prayer of a Rangkasbitung Man in Rotterdam). (17)
