Students protest expulsions

PURWOKERTO, Central Java: Some 100 students from Jendral Soedirman University protested against the expulsion of 300 students for various administrative and academic violations.

"We object to the decision. It is unfair," shouted one of the protesters.

Rector Rubiyanto Misman said the university was forced to expel the students because of serious breaches of academic and administrative regulations.

"Most of them failed to pay their tuition, while others failed to meet their academic schedules and requirements," he said.

Rubiyanto added that some of the expelled students were behind in their tuition by four to five semesters. (45/edt)
