Students mobbed for robbery

JAKARTA (JP): Three university students were mobbed by residents and passersby for robbing a woman of some cash on Jl. Adityawarman in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta on Thursday.

South Jakarta Police Chief Lt. Col. Sisno Adiwinoto said the students, Drajat, 21, Dedi, 21, and Ap, 23, drove a sedan and approached the woman, Rohati, 49, a resident of Jl. Cipadu in Ciledug, South Jakarta.

"One of the suspects grabbed Rohati's handbag and escaped with his friends in the car," Sisno said.

A police officer who saw the incident quickly chased the car, he said.

He said the car took a wrong turn and hit a sidewalk on Jl. Prof. Djoko Sutono near Aviation Technical High School, in South Jakarta.

Dozens of residents and passersby beat the suspects who tried to leave the car, he said.

The police officer arrived at the scene and calmed down the crowd, he said.

The three suspects suffered severe head and bodily injuries, Sisno said.

He said one of the suspects, Ap, managed to escape while the police officer called for backup.

The police seized the sedan and a bag containing Rp 300,000 (US$125) in cash and some documents. (jun)
