Students expelled for gambling

CIREBON, West Java: Five students of a state Islamic senior high school have been expelled after they were caught gambling, the school principal, Sudirno, said on Friday.

"The expulsion was discussed with the teachers council and the parents of the students. The parents accepted the decision," said Sudirno of MAN high school in Cigugur, Kuningan.

He said they had decided on a expulsion since the students who were found gambling in the school's canteen, were considered to have given the religious school a bad image.

Separately, SMUN I state high school principal Tarso acknowledged that he expelled a female student who was found consuming drugs in a recreation center in Cigugur.

"We have a report from people about the student. We then decided to expel the student since we could no longer teach her," Tarso was quoted by Antara as saying. (jun)
