Students demonstrate for lower prices

SEMARANG: More than 1,500 students of the Semarang Teachers Training Institute in the Central Java capital staged a demonstration on Monday, demanding the government lower prices of basic commodities.

The students also urged the government to take action against hoarders of basic commodities and called on President B.J. Habibie to let his predecessor Soeharto be investigated.

"Bring Soeharto and his cronies to court. If the President refuses to investigate them, we'll do it ourselves," said one demonstrator.

The students threatened to stage bigger demonstrations in the next few days if the government refused to meet their demands. (har)
