Students demand peaceful solution

YOGYAKARTA: Hundreds of students in Yogyakarta staged a protest on Monday calling on Indonesia and Malaysia to practice self- restraint and avoid war in their diplomatic row over the Ambalat oil blocks.

The student protesters said that war was not an option as it would only bring suffering to the people of both countries. They also called on people not to be easily provoked by the situation or to do anything to heighten tensions.

However, another group of protesters calling themselves the "Defend the Nation Command" held a protest in front of the Yogyakarta provincial council building demanding that the government and the Indonesian military (TNI) take tough action against anyone "threatening the sovereignty of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia". -- JP
