Students compete in PLN Cup

JAKARTA: Fifty two students from 26 provinces are taking part in the five-day PLN Cup with the top players getting a chance to make the junior national team.

The tournament, which began on Sunday at the PLN training building, is split into two group of competitors -- elementary school (SD) and high school (SMP/SMU) -- with a total of Rp 33 million up for grabs.

Hendry Djamals, an official of the Indonesian Chess Association (Percasi), said the participants had qualified from earlier tournaments in respective provinces.

"The top three from the groups will be included on the junior national team for further training development," Hendry said on the sidelines of the tournament.

PLN is the state electricity company whose president director Eddie Widiono also heads Percasi. --JP
