Students attack police station

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya (JP): Hundreds of angry students from Cendrawasih University attacked a police station in Abepura, Irian Jaya on Tuesday, following a beating of one student by a police cadet.

The students destroyed the building fences and windows, eye witnesses said.

The incident was sparked by a group of people who teased and shouted dirty words to the cadet. Irritated, he turned around and punched one of the people.

But the cadet mistakenly beat the university student, who happened to be standing there. Some other university students attempted to intervene, but the angry cadet attacked them as well.

Irian Jaya Police chief Brig. Gen. Silvianus Y. Wenas, met the students on Wednesday and apologized for the cadet's action.

Wenas promised to have the police cadet punished and asked the Cendrawasih University students to keep their cool.

The cadet had tarnished 'the love approach' being promoted by police in the area, Wenas said. (eba)
