Student killed in attack

JAKARTA (JP): An 18-year-old STM student was fatally stabbed in the ribs by a group of 10 students from a rival school in a street brawl on Jl. Soegiono, East Jakarta, on Saturday.

With tears in his eyes, Toni, the brother-in-law of the victim, said that Ahmad Yanwar, a student of STM technical senior high school in Tubun, could have been saved if local residents had been willing to do something to help the dying youth.

"It's so sad to learn that local residents, who witnessed the incident, did not immediately call the police or ambulance for help," he said.

Toni quoted witnesses as saying that Yanwar was waiting for a bus when the students from the Budi Murni high school surrounded and suddenly attacked the lone boy.

"Some of them even carried sharp weapons," he said.

Toni insisted that Yanwar was a nice boy and never became involved in student brawls.

"According to local residents, there was a dispute between residents living in the area with those same students a few days ago. But I had no idea about the motives of the students to attack Yanwar instead," he said.

Toni added that Duren Sawit police subprecinct had managed to arrest some of the students at the scene. (06)
