Student jailed for killing

JAKARTA (JP): The Central Jakarta District Court has sentenced a senior high school student to 25 months in jail for killing another senior high school student.

Presiding judge P.A. Sianipar said Thursday that the defendant Rahmad Fauzi, 18, stabbed Yopie Wahyudi on July 29 last year in a brawl on Jl. KH. Hasyim Ashari.

"The defendant slashed the victim in his right buttock with a knife. Yopie died a few hours later from severe bleeding," Sianipar said.

He said the incident took place when Rahmad, who was on a bus with his friends, was attacked by Yopie and his friends.

The brawl soon developed into a stone-throwing battle, he said.

Yopie and his friends tried to escape when they realized they were outnumbered, but failed and were caught by Rahmad and some of his friends.

The victim was then set upon and slashed by Rahmad, he said.

Sianipar said Rahmad violated Article 351 of the Criminal Code.

Prosecutor Endang Rachwan had asked the court to sentence the defendant to four years in jail. (jun)
