Student hurt by warning shots

MERAUKE, Irian Jaya: Isac Nasori, a student of a state high school here, is believed to be the victim of a police shooting after a traffic violation, Antara reported on Monday.

The agency quoted the commander of the local military police, Second Lt. Supardi, as saying that neurosurgeons at the Akademis Jauri Putra Ujungpandang Hospital found pieces of metal in the left part of his brain.

Irregular holes were also found in the victim's skull, Sapardi said quoting a recent letter from surgeons sent to his office.

Isac is still in intensive care.

The agency reported Isac was riding a motorcycle with two friends without using a helmet. Police chased them and fired warning shots. Isac fell, sustaining serious head injuries.

Merauke Police chief Lt. Col. Daud Sihombing said firm action would be taken against his subordinates if they were proved to have shot the teenager.
