Student advised to drop lawsuit

BANDUNG: Judge Satri Rusad suggested yesterday that the two disputing parties in the case of the dismissal of Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) student Budhi Sumarso should seek an out-of-court settlement before the court proceeds with their case.

Budhi's lawyers welcomed the proposal saying that their main objective is that their client's education should not be disrupted by the trials.

However lawyers for the ITB rector displayed less enthusiasm, saying that they would relay the message to their client. "We're just here carrying out their mandate," one of the lawyers said.

Budhi Sumarso was dismissed from ITB earlier this year after a freshman student died during initiation ceremonies held by a committee headed by Budhi. (17/mds)
