Street vendors to be relocated

JAKARTA (JP): The City Council's Commission B, in charge of economic affairs, wants the East Jakarta mayoralty to speed up the relocation of street vendors into area markets as soon as possible.

"The mayoralty has already prepared three locations to accommodate the street vendors," Hasan Dasy, a member of the commission, told reporters yesterday.

The locations with a total area of 3,000 square meters are Jl. Nusa Indah, Klender, Kampung Makasar and Cililitan.

"In East Jakarta there are about 2,500 street vendors," Hasan said, adding that the mayoralty plans to build more locations.

Hasan said that the relocation of vendors in the mayoralty faces problems due mainly to the small-scale traders' resistance. (yns)
