Standardization meeting

JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Council for National Standardization (DSN) will host a conference of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) next week to discuss international standardization for electrical equipment.

DSN's secretary Herudi Kartowisastro said yesterday that about 40 member countries, including the United States, Germany, Britain and Japan, are expected to participate in the IEC conference in Hotel Indonesia from Sunday to Friday.

The IEC conference will formulate, among other things, the technical specification and requirement for "switchgear and controlgear", the electrical equipment which connects and distributes electricity from a power plant.

The IEC -- established in 1906 in Geneva as an independent international organization -- has 52 member countries. Its mission is to increase international cooperation on standardization, particularly on electricity and electronic goods.

DSN, set up in 1984, became Indonesia's formal representative in international standardization organizations, including IEC, in 1986. (bnt)
