Standard tariff for ASEAN

JAKARTA (JP): The ASEAN Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Working Committee for Infrastructure and Tourism (WCIT) has proposed charter tariffs among nonscheduled airlines in the region be standardized.

WCIT's executive director, Barens Saragih, said yesterday the rental standardization was needed to support ASEAN tourism.

He said such cooperation would improve services to tourists renting planes while visiting ASEAN.

"We are still discussing how to formulate the cooperation plan," Saragih was quoted by Antara as saying.

The 53rd WCIT council opened here yesterday and ends today.

ASEAN groups Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia are expected to join soon.

The meeting also discussed human resource development in the telecommunications sector and the roaming service and billing system of cellular telephone services.

The committee also discussed maritime fraud which hurts exporters, importers and insurance firms.

"Such fraud can damage the image ASEAN members. We expect the governments to collect any information on vessels suspected of frauds," he said

A possible cooperation on investment activities on ports, roads and electricity was also discussed, he said. (icn)
