S'pore schools protect int'l students' fees

JAKARTA: As many as 102 private education organizations (PEOs) in Singapore have signed up for the so-termed student protection scheme, which is expected to protect international students' fees.

The scheme, which came into effect early this month, serves to protect fees in cases when a PEO cannot continue to operate due to insolvency or regulatory closure, or has failed to pay penalties or return fees to students arising from a judgment made against it by a court.

According to a statement issued by the Singapore Tourism Board on Thursday, international students would benefit from the program as the process of applying to PEOs in the neighboring country would be clearer and more transparent.

It said only PEOs under the scheme were able to secure student passes for the recruitment of international students.

The scheme does not affect students enrolling in public institutions, foreign system schools and world leading institutions in Singapore, it said. -- JP
