Special carriages for elderly, children

YOGYAKARTA: The local office of the state railway company Perumka will provide special carriages for the elderly and children under five years of age during the Idul Fitri holiday.

Antara quoted spokesman Purnomo as saying yesterday the company will assign one or two carriages in the economy section of trains leaving the Lempuyangan station here for elderly people and children under five.

He said Perumka is anticipating a hike in the number of passengers returning to Jakarta and other major cities in Java after the holiday.

"Huge numbers of passengers bound for Jakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya usually flood the Lempuyangan station after Idul Fitri," he said.

He said the local Perumka office will provide 19 trains with a total 153 carriages for the Idul Fitri holiday. It will also give discounts of up to 20 percent for economy class passengers.

He said the company has decided that the Lempuyangan railway station will only accommodate economy class trains while the Tugu railway station will accommodate business and executive class trains. (swe)
