Spaniard's photos on show

JAKARTA (JP): A charity photography exhibition by Spanish photographer Paco Corral, was opened on Wednesday by Spanish Ambassador Antonio Segura Moris in the lobby of the Gran Melia hotel in Kuningan, South Jakarta.

The exhibition, titled A Glance at Indonesia, displays 39 black-and-white photographs and six color images, taken by Corral during the past year.

Embassy's cultural attache Miriam Padilla said the idea for the exhibition was prompted by a desire to help Indonesian families suffering from the crisis.

"(It) constitutes a homage to this country, whose people are currently undergoing the trials of a crisis which will lead to a better society."

All works in the exhibition are for sale and are priced between Rp 1 million and Rp 2 million.

A book released to commemorate the exhibition, which illustrates all pictures on display, is offered for sale at Rp 100,000 for the softcover edition and Rp 150,000 for the hardcover version.

"All proceeds from the exhibition ... will be donated to charities through established institutions, such as the Salesian Foundation, whose members are engaged in the honorable work of providing food to more than 2,000 children and older people," Miriam said.

Corral, a professional photographer in Spain, in a joint effort with colleagues, previously issued an album with artistic views of Madrid and Spain in Black and White in an international magazine.

This is Corral's third photography exhibition in Jakarta, after his 1996 and 1997 shows.

The exhibition runs to April 4. (bsr)
