Sony to use local design

JAKARTA (JP): PT Sony Electronic Indonesia, a subsidiary of Japan's Sony Corporation, will begin designing modified audio products in Indonesia later this year.

Company president T. Tezuka said here over the weekend that after a two-year period of training and preparation, Sony would enter local design, mechanical design and electrical audio production later this year.

"We will increase the number of employees and expand the design functions," he said at the opening of the Sony exhibition at the Jakarta Convention Center. The exhibition will run until Feb. 2.

Sony Electronic Indonesia, set up to sell all its products in the domestic and overseas markets, is a major producer of hi-fi stereo sets, radio/tape recorders and compact disc/tape recorders.

In Indonesia, PT Sony Indonesia is its marketing arm and its television assembler is PT Sony Manufacturing Indonesia.

Sony said in Japan over the weekend it was considering entering the digital broadcasting market after negotiations on a possible capital participation with JSKyB. (icn)
