Son beats mom over tafu

JAKARTA (JP): Suprihatin, 55, had to be rushed to the emergency unit of a hospital on Monday after being badly beaten by her son, who fell over after accidentally slipping on a piece of tofu she had just bought at the market.

After being treated at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital for the head injury she had incurred, the widow told reporters that she had reported the assault committed by her unemployed son Yuspriadi, 30, to Tanah Abang Police.

She said police had summoned Yuspriadi, who lives with his wife and son at Suprihatin's house in the Tanah Abang area, for questioning.

The woman explained she had just arrived home from the market when she heard Yuspriadi arriving.

Suprihatin said she had forgot to bring her groceries into the house but had instead left them in the doorway.

When Yuspriadi walked in, he accidentally kicked them.

"But he fell on the floor when he stepped on a piece of tofu," she recalled.

The accident made him very angry, Suprihatin continued.

Yuspriadi yelled at her and blamed her for the accident. He then approached her and hit her on her head several times.

The woman said that Yuspriadi, the fourth of six children, often become violent when he got angry.

"There have been times when he has thrown a glass filled with hot coffee at me," Suprihatin wept.

She was escorted to the hospital by civilian security personnel.

She said her five other children live in their own homes. (06)
