Some 74 boxers to attend Golden Gloves

SEMARANG (JP): Top national boxers are expected to perform in the Golden Gloves amateur boxing championships at BPLP auditorium here which starts from Sunday to Friday.

Chief of the organizing committee, Kristanto, said that 74 boxers, including veteran light heavyweight Albert Papilaya of Jakarta, flyweight Hermensen Ballo of East Nusa Tenggara, welterweight Bara Gommies of Maluku and Johny Simangunsong of North Sumatra, will compete in the event.

Eleven weight divisions will be featured in the championships.

"The Golden Gloves aimed at stimulating the national boxing development. It also serves as a selection tool for boxers who will compete in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and the world championships in India," Kristanto told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

The National Sports Council (KONI) chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar will inaugurate the championships at 7 p.m.

"The championships is free of charge, but we provide tickets to prevent overloading," Kristanto said. (har)
